A Prayer for the
Conquest of Cancer

Our Lord, in whose hands are the issues of life and death, we thank you that you are a God of love.

From the gift of our lives to the moment we return to you, we are in your loving care. We turn to you in times of joy and times of pain.

We are concerned for those in pain, those who suffer from cancer, and for those who care for them.

Bless those who minister to the persons afflicted with this dread disease. Give them skill and knowledge that cures may be wrought.

Grant the gifts of patience and strength for families of those who suffer. Heal those who suffer, that the pain may be replaced by joy.

Give discovery of the cure for cancer and knowledge of how to prevent it.

Increase your ministry of healing through all who labor in research and the health professions...

That one day we may rejoice in a world free from the scourge of cancer in which all may live out their span of life in useful service to you and your children.

For this we pray.
To you we shall give praise!
Amen.

Dick Boyd’s Cancer Survivors Ride 2008

Look around you, know that we are the privileged and give thanks.

This will be Dick Boyd’s ninth ride, in as many years, to help raise funds and awareness for the Iron County Cancer Unit. Each year the ride has begun in a different city in the United States. This year’s ride will begin in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He’ll leave the mountains and ride south to El Paso, Texas and east to Big Bend National Park, camping and exploring for about two weeks. The route north will be through Fort Worth, Texas, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Wichita, Kansas, Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, St Paul, Minnesota, and east to his home in Iron River, Michigan.

This year’s official Iron County Cancer Unit’s Cancer Survivors Ride will begin on March 4th, 2008. The complete tour will be somewhere around 3,000 miles and pass through nine states. He expects to return to Iron River about the middle of May.

Life deals out many challenges, sometimes fair, other times unjust. Cancer is unfair and blind to where and who it deals its hurtful blows. I am thankful that I am one of the helpers and not one that is in need of help. I celebrate my gift of health by being able to contribute to our communities’ friends and neighbors as they fight the courageous battle against cancer.

During the months of riding across our country I meet people up close and personal, many inviting me into their homes to assist my comfort and share their experiences of dealing with cancer. Communities and people vary widely when compared to our life in the Upper Peninsula, but fighting the cancer battle makes us neighbors in a way that only tragedy does. In the past eight years I have talked and shared hugs with countless hundreds of people who have cancer, are in remission or have a loved one who is stricken. So often tears accompany these brief meetings as they thank me for encouraging cancer-free people to contribute to those less able to help themselves. Personal moments like this are humbling and at the same time it is my reward for being able to help.

I’ll keep pedaling up and down the hills, and across the plains, while you generously give your donations. Together we will make life a little easier, easing the burden, for our cancer survivors in their time of need.

I’m glad to be able to be a small part of a large hearted, giving and caring community. We can be proud helping our cancer survivors receive treatment and comfort for this disease that touches us all, directly or indirectly.

Whether a morning on the road offers-up rain in a tent, sunshine in a motel or smiles on a stranger’s couch, I am happy just having the health to be helping. The longer I am allowed to walk this earth, the more I realize that helping others liberates a deep residing joy that lives only in the heart.” Iron County Cancer Unit is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to providing care and comfort to Iron County cancer patients and their families through financial assistance and health care equipment and products. Given that the previous fund raising rides have increased working funds, the Unit has been able to increase its cash allotment to cancer patients by 500% and perform much needed maintenance on it’s loan closet equipment. The ICCU used to give families $100 to cover necessary expenses that are not covered by insurance plans. Now they dispense $500 checks. Awareness about ICCU – what it is and what it does --was also advanced as a result of the rides.
