Another year of service and fund raising has come to an end for the Iron County Cancer Unit (ICCU) its volunteers and donors. The stark reality remains that many still suffer because of cancer. But anything our community has done and can do to help those suffering is done with great and warm appreciation.

We are so grateful for those who donate money, items to the loan closet, volunteer time, volunteer services, help with mailings and help maintain (Great Lakes Medical) and transport equipment.

Dick Boyd, a kind, compassionate soul, came through for us once again this year with his bicycle ride across country. His drive is remarkable. His reason is never far from his mind having lost a sister and his mother to the disease. We can never thank him enough. Most of us could never fathom jumping on a bicycle and going that far. But that doesn't mean there isn't some way to contribute to this need that will not end in the near future.

Despite the economy our community did not let us down when it came to funds raised this year. Our radio fund raiser and subsequent donations has so far netted over $16,000. We regret this was the last year for Jay Barry to assist us in surpassing our goal once again. We thank him for all the years he has helped and supported us. We wish him well in his retirement.

During the fundraiser WIKB staff person, Leslie Howell was invaluable in fielding phone calls to Bev Holmes, Faye Plessinger, Jolane Spoke and Linda Dobson. Marilyn Budzak is always ready to lend her skills on the microphone whenever the need arises. The Reporter's Allyce Westphal does a great job of getting information out for our cause. Dan Stafford continues to maintain our web site. Again this year Jeff and Pam Patur and their fellow Harley Davidson riders raised donations on one of their rides. We also appreciate Enola Lang and The Carrie Jacobs Bond Quilters for their hat making skills. Thank you to all!

So far this year we have had 42 applications for assistance. Cancer patients are allowed $600 per patient year which may be used for: Prostheses, Food Supplements, Colostomy Supplies, Cancer Medications, Transportation and Lodging for out of town treatments, along with our equipment and supplies from our loan closet.
